Inside Line Promotions – TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 16, 2018) – Derek Hagar produced his career-best Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals performance last week inside the River Spirit Expo Center.
The Hagar-Proctor Racing driver opened the 32nd edition of the famed event on Tuesday by advancing from fourth to third place in a heat race.
“We had some issues and broke a rocker arm, which hurt our weekend a bit,” he said. “Then it got us again in the qualifier. When you only have four cylinders you need them all to work at the same time.”
Hagar finished where he started – seventh – in a qualifier, which relegated him to a B Main. He battled for one of the four transfer positions for most of the race before ending eighth.
“We had a good run and got to fourth early,” he said. “We were right there with the top three guys on the bottom and the top came in. It was like a freight train. I didn’t get up to the top quick enough and we lost some ground.”
Following the four preliminary nights Hagar lined up on the outside of the front row for an F Main on Saturday. He won the race before capping the event by advancing from 13th to 10th in an E Main, which marked his career-best finish at the Chili Bowl.
“We had a good car,” he said. “There wasn’t a whole lot of passing in the second main. I was running sixth or seventh behind some guys on the bottom. I was either going to not make it running there or try something so I went to the top and lost a few spots. If it worked it worked and if it didn’t we still weren’t going to transfer running where we were.
“It was a good week for us. We learned a lot the whole week, talking to different people and changing some stuff. I’m pretty excited about it because we were competitive with some good guys. We’ve made the car a whole lot better. I’m looking forward to our next midget race.”
