Inside Line Promotions – WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (July 25, 2018) – Derek Hagar registered his 12th consecutive top-five result in a 360ci winged sprint car with a podium finish last Saturday at Riverside International Speedway.
Hagar opened the ASCS Mid-South Region show by winning a heat race after starting on the outside of the front row.
“We got the lead right on the start and led the whole heat race,” he said. “That put us into the feature redraw and we pulled the No. 6 to start the main event sixth.
“The groove was the middle and bottom in turns three and four and around the bottom in turns one and two. I would slide the corner in turns one and two and catch the cushion midway through the corner up top. I’d keep my momentum up. I could hug them tight off turn three and exit off turn four to get by them.”
Hagar maneuvered to a third-place result, marking his fourth straight podium.
“We didn’t have a winning car, but I think we had a second-place car,” he said. “We slid the guy for second and he got underneath me. He pushed up and I got underneath him, but he chopped me. Then we had a caution with a green-white-checkered finish. I couldn’t get a clean run to try to make a move on him so we settled for third.
“It was a very good night. Any time you pass cars and finish on the podium it’s a good deal. We need to get better at our redraws and quit starting so far back. Twenty five laps isn’t a lot of time so you need to start up there with them.”
Hagar is slated to compete this Saturday at Greenville Speedway in Greenville, Miss., with the USCS Series.
“It’s one of those tracks you have to be up on the concrete wall,” he said. “The cushion gets right against the wall and sometimes the wall is the cushion. It takes a brave soul to run it consistently for 30 laps. It’s a race track that fits our style and we’ve had some success there so we’re looking forward to it.”
